Every year, Framingham State University holds a competition
for a Mr.
FSU, who is supposed to be a respectable and responsible male student to
represent our student body. And oh yeah,
he also has to dance around the stage to the song “I’m Sexy and I Know it”. In an essence it is a beauty pageant, for men. It is a bit of a prestigious title for
someone to achieve around campus. It
declares that person as someone who is widely accepted and in a position to act
in accordance with the expectations of fellow students.
So why can I not earn this title? Well, because I am not a man.
I am no feminist, but doesn’t it sound a bit ridiculous that
there is a Mr. FSU, but not a Ms. FSU?
It almost implies that we are better off representing ourselves with a male
than a female. As I ponder through the
past three years here trying to find something that is similar in its sexist ways, I do not
think I can think of anything quite as blatant as this.
There is the Fashion Show which I recently participated in,
but even there I saw a mix of gender.
I must mention that I cannot imagine that there has not been
thought about this previously, which makes me think whether there is a deeper reasoning
behind there Mr. FSU competition and its strict inclusion of only males. In our progressive society the aim against
sexism is still thriving, so it seems impossible that Mr. FSU has been
overlooked.
I do not think women should get special treatment, nor do I
think men should get special treatment.
That is why I think that there should be both a Mr. and a Ms. FSU. That way there will not only be two representatives,
but the representatives would be of different genders, which can contribute differing
opinions to various subjects.
I, as a member and planner of Mr. FSU for the past two years, can absolutely see your point. In all reality, I WANT to do a Ms. FSU competition next year, giving the other gender an equal shot as well. Truthfully, the preparation for such a large, homegrown event is not easy. The months of planning and coordination of everything from getting their song choices in order for the DJ to getting their tuxes fitted at a local tux shop is NOT simple and not something that can be thrown together. Ms. FSU will hopefully be something done in the future, and I would encourage all to nominate and participate. Just realize the amount of work that goes into it; Ms. FSU has not been overlooked but simply not executed, yet that is.
