With this weekend brings the annual celebration of Earth
Day. Many think of tree-hugging and outdoor activities but it is much more than
that now. Today, thousands will take part in local clean ups, and celebrate “Going
Green”. I think now more than ever Earth Day is important.
I will admit have not been the most actively “green” person
out there. I never really changed by life style when the “green movement” took
off a few years ago. However recently I have changed my ways. This may sound
childish in a way but I saw a presentation on polar bears, and how their environment
is being destroyed by global warming and the o-zone layer and that really moved
me.
Although polar bears are considered marine mammals due to
their excessive time in the water, on land is where they make their lives. With
global warming increasing every day scientists believe that by
2050 two thirds of the existing polar bears will be gone.
Since seeing this presentation and sad statistic, I have
slowly changed by ways to try and be more “green”. I have cut my use of plastic
water bottle use by re using a stainless steel water bottle, and recycling the
plastic that I do use. Re-useable bags for groceries and clothes shopping are
another way to cut the use of plastic and paper bags. This Earth Day lets think
about how we live and try and make a change. Do it for the Polar Bears!
I will admit, I am not a very "green" person, but this post did a good job conveying how small things can make a difference. Especially a difference in something we (or I) wouldn't associate with being "green." I liked the organization of this blog. You opened by linking it to something current and then went on with the importance of being green. I also appreciated how you admitted that being "green" isn't something you have gone out of your way to do in the past.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked to hear more about how being green will directly effect and help the polar bears, and some link between that and preserving their life since you talked about their decline.
