Making Better Choices

What happened to going outside on a nice day? Why would you spend all your money on an Xbox? What is the point of having a Television in your room? Why is everyone spending so much time trying to get to a new level of a game instead of spending time with friends?

These are all questions I ask myself about my generation and the younger ones. The television has come such a big part in every ones lives even if they do not want to admit it. I know me personally I do like to watch a movie sometimes and have those shows that I like to watch every week but there is a point where it is too much.

Part of the problem is the parents when they are allowing their children to spend all day playing video game. I know it is not a big deal when they are younger by letting them have time every day on a game but that cannot become their life and create problems later. Parents need to monitor children’s screen time and teach them that there are more important things. I am not a parent but having babysat children, I know that it can sometimes be hard and is just easier to let them win, bot are the one in charge, not them.

I think that being outdoors is very important for every child and can almost free them. Allowing them to just run around and get all their energy out can be just as easy as putting them in front of a television for you. Kids are so good at making up games and being able to play the same thing over and over so let them try. Being outside allows kids to meet new friends, get fresh air, and creates a better attention span by not limiting them to short television shows.  These are all benefits and are mostly up to the child to accomplish, but do not give the option to sit there in front of a screen.

There are plenty of other things to do instead of spending all day in front of a screen.

  1. I agree not enough people take advantage of enjoying the outside. One of my professors was talking about an article that stated the average person watches more than four hours of television a day! I was shocked to hear this.

  2. Video games, computer games and the other technology was not around when I was young, therefore my sister and I always played outside with the other kids in the neighborhood. Now, I see my younger cousins and they are glued to the television watching TV and playing video games. There are studies out there that show that children that play video games are twice as likely to be obese. I think we need to cut the games and kids need to get back outside.

  3. I completely agree Kim Kardashian, there has got to be some way where the tv does not play such a big role in everyone's lives. And I am just learning now that the average person spends more then 4 hours a day watching tv, that is ridiculous! But I can also believe it which is even worse.

  4. With respect to video games and obesity... See https://xkcd.com/552

With respect to television... I don't watch it. It's amazing how much time I have available for other pursuits because I don't subject myself to other people's drama and incessant advertising. Like, manipulating the economy in LotRO. Or spending an hour or two a week commenting in blogs.
