Racial Inequality in the World

Racial equality was a huge problem in the past and many believe that it is fixed and that is not the case. There are so many cases where discrimination has been present in society. I would have thought at this time the world would have improved and gotten used to the fact that we are all equal. Equality between all men and woman is a simple concept, there is really nothing confusing about it. In the past we know all about the slaves and how awful they were treated, but for some people, they think that nothing has changed and there is no need to, so they treat anyone who is not like them different.  I have a friend from home who is African American and when we were out in public people have been racist. Even in this day people still either think they are better or just grow up in houses where they are taught these things. Not only was she hurt but I was shocked that people still think this way.

Discrimination happens for every race no matter where in the world you are and when I see it being done I feel bad because nobody should go through it. These cases can come up anywhere and its just a huge shock to everyone around. Every person is born different and has different races but no matter what that is they should be accepted into society like it. You should also not be ashamed of the way you look, you should be proud of that ethnicity and embrace it. These features cannot just go away and they shouldn’t. I have not dealt with discrimination personally and I would hope that anyone could say that, but the cant.

Children are supposed to be taught how to act appropriate and teaching them how to treat others differently who do not look like them is wrong in every way! We have come so far in this world and living in the past is what is keeping everyone else back too.

It has taken many years to get from the Holocaust, slaves and all other things that are a personal attack to what people look like or where they come from. This problem will take a long time to go away so why not start now to improve it little by little. Everyone needs to be accepting of everyone no matter their race. We are in a different time and I would have hoped it would be better and I am appalled that it has not. With every step towards eliminating discrimination on race there is a greater chance it will not continue to other generations.

  1. We are not "all equal". We are all individuals, with differing skills, interests, backgrounds, and opportunity. I'm a bit confused as to whether you see a distinction between an Orwellian "everyone is equal" and "equality of opportunity". That made it difficult for me to understand your paragraphs about racial inequality, discrimination, and oppression.

  3. I agree. Especially with the case of Trayvon Martin being such a huge issue in our country right now (as it should be), it saddens me to see that this is still happening, and to be honest it's scary. I found this video(http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3Mn9QDXN9Ys) that talks about how many people are saying that racism isn't relevant anymore. However, with the matters of Trayvon and the cases mentioned in the video, you cannot deny that it is still an issue today - it's just not talked about anymore, and that is worrying. I also believe that everyone should be treated equally and not stereotyped and judged based on their race/appearance, sexual orientation, faith, etc, but sadly that concept is not as easy for some people to accept; I wish I knew why. It's often a vicious cycle: one learns it from their parents who grow up to pass it on to their kids, who learn it from their parents and grow up to pass it on to their children, etc you get the picture. The constant encouragement of hate is justified in ignorance, in familial beliefs, and it will take a lot more to convince them that their ideas are wrong than just saying they are. Hopefully one of these days prejudicial matters of race really will stop, and hopefully die out with the generation. One can only hope.
